Why Go to Nepal?

Filip and I (Elena) first want to share a verse that we hope to be not only mission for our two and a half month stay in Nepal but, Lord willing, the very themes that flies as a banner over our lives. That is,

“If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing of the finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” (Isaiah 58:4)

As the verse (and entire chapter) speaks profoundly too, our lives here on earth are about mission. Of course, I do not want to advert the first and foremost purpose of our lives being worship of God, but I think that many of us, myself included, forget to get up out of my seat and allow mission to be the outflow of our worship to God.  As Theologian John Piper articulates well, “Worship is the fuel and goal of missions. It’s the goal of missions because we in missions simply aim to bring nations into the white hot enjoyment of God’s glory” (Let the Nations Be Glad).  As we are transformed more and more into Christ’s likeness the inclinations of our hearts conform to his and we too desire to see God’s kingdom here on earth. We desire to be at the very heart of God’s work, which as defined in James 1:27 includes helping the orphan and widow in their distress.

So with that foundation, Filip and I seek to serve in various capacities here in Nepal for both God’s glory and the furthering of His Kingdom!
